How Can You Make God Love You More?
What can you do to make God love you any more?
How about less?
What can you say to make God love you more?
How about less?
We each have a list of things we can say or do that can make God love you more. Everyone knows that reading the bible, praying the daily office, coming to Church, giving your money to good causes (most especially the church), and other such good activates make God love you more. DUH, that's why the preacher is always harping abut these things.
We each have a list of those things we can say or do that can make God love you less. Everyone knows that being greedy, not going to church, cussing, drinking too much, stealing, having lustful thoughts, and all sorts of other fun but illicit activities make God love you less. DUH that's why the preacher is always harping about these things
All that talk about doing and saying good things to make God love you more is simply not true. All that talk about
doing and saying bad things making God love you less is simply not true. I won't say people have been lying to you about this because they were probably taught this by well meaning people who were t aught by well meaning people and so on down the line until we reached the present state of things. To borrow from Phillip Larkin they mess you up your mom and dad—they don’t mean to but they do. They were messed up in their own turn and added some extra just for you.
But it seems so intuitively right that what we say or do is going to God love us more or less. We are used to transactional quid pro quo relationships. Its just the way the world works. If you look out for me I will look out for you. Otherwise, and here I am borrowing from Jay Z if you kill my dog I’m gonna shoot your cat.
But that's not love? That's just conducting business, or networking, or politicking or whatever it is you want to call it But you can’t call it love because it ain't love.
Hear me clearly. You are loved by God. There is nothing you can ever say or do or not say or not do that can make God love you any more. God just simply loves you. God loves even though you are not worthy of that love. You are just simply loved by God because God has an outrageous love
This is one of those things that is really hard to believe.
We want to judge ourselves and judge other people and find all sorts of reasons why we aren't good enough. Then when we look at the world and our lives and the lives of other people and there is no shortage of shortcomings.
We start to see ourselves as unloveable. Then we try to outdo everyone else so we can earn God's love and then we get to judging. We set ourselves as judges over ourselves. Then we set ourselves as judges over others in a hopeless attempt to feel better about ourselves.
But you hare been bought with a hefty price (I Cor 6:20) and belong to Jesus. These people we all secretly judge to feel marginally better about ourselves were bought for a price. We already belong to the Lord. If you belong to the Lord then who are you to judge them. If you belong to the Lord who are you to judge you?
Judging is Jesus' job and not yours!
The good news is that Jesus is not a fair impartial judge. Unlike Lady Justice who stands there with the scale
in her hand with a blindfold on Jesus cheats on your behalf. Jesus secretly looks under the blindfold & makes sure he knows where you are and rests his thumb on the scale and cheats for you a little bit because he loves you no matter what. This is what the cross and grace are all about.
So don't worry so much if you are going to be able stand up and pass judgement or not. Jesus loves you
and has got you back on this. You just worry about becoming great friends with Jesus.
